Latest company news about The European and American steel industry initiated the establishment of the Global Steel Climate Council

News from our newspaper On November 17, more than 20 institutions from the European Union and the United States, including steel companies, industry associations, scrap steel suppliers, steel users, etc., announced the establishment of the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) , and set up an official website to urge the United States and the European Union to adopt unified emission standards and encourage local steel companies to use low-carbon production processes to reduce carbon emissions.

The founding members of the Global Steel Climate Council include Spain's CELSA Iron and Steel Group (one of the largest long product producers in Spain and Europe), Nucor Steel, Steel Dynamics, and the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA). Other members of the council include: ALTON Steel Company, Arvedi Company, Evraz North America Company, CHARTER Steel Company, Liberty Steel Company, Spanish Megasa Group, Italian long products producer Pittini Group, Tenaris and other enterprises.

Most steel companies in the world mainly use raw materials such as coal, iron ore, and limestone to produce steel, and the production process is carbon-intensive. More than 70% of steel products in the United States and more than 40% in the European Union are produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF).

Stakeholders and policy makers in the global steel industry are currently considering trying to formulate corresponding emission standards for different steel production processes. It is a carbon emission standard formulated for the recycling process of scrap steel.

It is understood that member companies of the Global Steel Climate Council have mastered steel production technologies that can reduce carbon emissions. The mission of the Global Steel Climate Council is to promote the development of truly effective carbon emission standards for steel production and accurately calculate carbon emissions.

The Global Steel Climate Council expects to formulate scientific carbon emission standards based on actual carbon emissions. This standard will apply to all steel companies and will encourage global steel companies to work hard to reduce carbon emissions. The council said that the new carbon emission standards should encourage steel companies to take actions such as improving the carbon reduction efficiency of electric arc furnaces, developing and producing greener and advanced reduced iron, and actively promoting the research and development of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology, etc. , to minimize carbon emissions.

The Global Steel Climate Council stated that the establishment of the new carbon emission standards will follow the following five guiding principles: first, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the global steel industry; second, establish standards that have nothing to do with production processes; third, establish a Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions; the fourth is to establish standards consistent with the scientific carbon emission reduction path, and achieve the goal of not exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by 2050; the fifth is to provide relevant decision makers with Information on sustainable development in the steel industry.
