Abhyuday Jindal, managing director of stainless steel maker Jindal Stainless, said on Monday that the company has undertaken several initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions by 140,000 tonnes in the 2021-22 financial year.

 

To achieve this, JSL has also created the post of Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) and appointed Kalyan Kumar Bhattacherjee to the key position.

 

"From investing in renewable energy, green hydrogen production, to introducing electric vehicles at our manufacturing plants, we are continuously building an ecosystem that supports our environmental, governance goals (ESG)," he said.

 

Bhattacherjee will lead sustainability initiatives to reduce carbon emissions for the company's current and future capacity expansion plans, with the goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

 

Bhattacherjee said JSL is the first stainless steel company in India to install a green hydrogen plant to produce stainless steel.

 

“We are continuing to invest in process upgrades in low-carbon technologies, recycling processes, digitization and energy efficiency projects,” he said.

 

As part of its carbon reduction plan, JSL recently signed an agreement with RenNew Power to develop a utility-scale autonomous renewable energy project in Jajpur that will generate 700 million units of clean energy per year using solar and wind technologies .
Jindal Stainless is also partnering with Hygenco India Private Ltd to build a green hydrogen plant in Hisar, which will help in reducing CO2 emissions significantly.
